Potions are timed decisions

Summoner’s Gambit launch content highlights 35+ potions with a variety of instant effects. Knowing when to use them can turn the tide; knowing when to refuse them keeps Ascension runs alive. Core potion jobs

Energy trims / bust saves — Pull a fight back under the blackjack-style 21 limit or make the final summon legal. Highest beginner priority (Beginner Builds).

Stabilizers — Instant sustain or recovery when your spine is collapsing. Forest long maps love these (Child of the Forest Builds).

Redraws and sequence fixes — Replace a brick without forcing a desperation overflow.

Burst windows — Temporary spikes that finish a board you already seated correctly. Wilds tempo and PvP engine deletes love these (King of the Wilds Builds, Async PvP).

Setup enablers — Effects that help a fusion payoff or disruption line land this fight (Card Fusion, Lord of Shadows Builds).

Hoarding rules that win runs

1. Do not snack S-tier bottles on free early fights.
2. Label one bottle as “boss insurance” in your head.
3. Spend redraws before you spend overflow luck.
4. Never drink to hide a seating mistake you can fix between fights.
5. On Ascension (Ascension), assume the map is longer than your ego.

Noble Serpent players should treat potions as ledger corrections (Noble Serpent Builds). Shadows players must not confuse bust saves with permission to lifestyle overflow.

Potions versus runes

Runes change the run; potions change the minute. If every fight requires a bottle, your rune package or creature spine is wrong—return to Items Runes and the Runes Tier List. If you never drink anything, you may be over-hoarding past the point of usefulness; spend on known walls.

Fight workflow

Before the battle starts, name the failure you fear: backlash, dead frontline, brick draws, or enemy engine. Pick the potion that answers that failure. After seating (Getting Started), decide whether you still need the drink. Many “must potion” feelings disappear when attack priority is fixed.

During the fight, prefer prevention over cleanup. Trimming energy before the illegal summon is cleaner than mourning backlash. Burst after disruption lands, not before.

Async and challenge notes

Common potion mistakes

Panic drinking, early-map snacking, using burst to cover bad rows, and ignoring bottles until Judgment of Life is the only conversation left. Another mistake is treating this guide and the Potions tier list as the same page—you want both.
