Runes Guide

What runes do

Runes are long-term modifiers you collect during a Summoner’s Gambit run. Launch feature lists call out 150+ runes (development posts sometimes said 100+) that unlock powerful bonuses and unique synergies with your chosen class. Unlike potions, runes reshape every future fight: summoning math, survivability, fusion payoff, and how forgiving your formation can be.

This page is the systems guide. For relative strength rankings, open the Runes Tier List (tier-list category—different URL on purpose). Sibling catalogs: Creature Cards, Potions. Hub: Items.

Pick runes like you pick energy habits

The game’s blackjack-inspired rule makes energy the silent currency of every build. A rune that keeps your typical deployment under backlash often beats a larger damage number that encourages living at 20–21. Read Energy Overflow until that sentence feels obvious, then shop runes that protect the habit you want—Serpent discipline, Forest patience, Shadows calculated risk, or Wilds tempo with a safety rail.

Class manuals: Noble Serpent, Child of the Forest, Lord of Shadows, King of the Wilds, Beginner Builds.

Synergy versus raw power

Exclusive card pools want runes that share verbs with their creatures—growth, disruption, priority, sustain, kill conversion. Raw power runes are fine fillers; synergy clarifiers turn a pile into a plan. If a rune buffs a pattern you did not draft, skip it even when the rarity looks mythic. Pair choices with role targets from the Units Tier List and class placement from the Classes Tier List.

Fusion-facing runes

Because nearly all creature cards can fuse and hybrids inherit traits from both parents, runes that improve fusion economy or amplify post-fusion hybrids deserve early attention. Do not stack five fusion toys before you own parents—see Card Fusion. The best fusion rune still loses to a missing win-condition hybrid.

Formation-facing runes

Auto-battler positioning means some bonuses are secretly seating tools: effects that help a frontliner contest priority, extend skill range relevance, or keep a backline payoff alive. Evaluate these with your actual rows, not with abstract DPS spreadsheets. Getting Started covers the boring spine you should already be using.

Ascension and ladder packages

Ascension challenges stretch maps and punish vanity. Prefer runes that still matter on hour two: energy safety, survival through events, win-condition amplifiers. For Async PvP, build snapshots with rune packages that do not assume the opponent misplays into your highlight reel. A PvE greed stack can be a ladder liability.

Practical pickup loop

  1. Lock a class spine and fusion target.
  2. Take the first strong energy-safety rune you see.
  3. Add one synergy clarifier that matches exclusive cards.
  4. Add amplifiers only after the hybrid exists.
  5. Refuse anti-synergy trophies.

Potions cover emergencies the runes cannot—use Items Potions and the Potions Tier List. When patches reshuffle bonuses, check Updates. Planning helpers live in Tools. Builds index: Builds. Tier hub: Tier List.

Common rune mistakes

Taking every shiny icon, stacking overflow lifestyle before you have a floor, ignoring class verbs, and expecting runes to fix bad seating. Another mistake is treating this page and the Runes tier list as duplicates—you need both the how and the ranking.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How many runes are available at launch?

Official launch messaging highlights 150+ runes. Earlier announcements mentioned 100+ during development—expect the catalog to evolve with patches.

What is the first rune job I should secure?

Energy safety. Widening your legal summon band prevents more losses than most damage bonuses.

Do runes differ by class?

Runes create unique synergies with your chosen class and exclusive pool. Bias toward bonuses that share a verb with your creatures.

Why are there two rune pages on the wiki?

Items Runes (this page) teaches systems; Tier List Runes ranks jobs for draft speed.

Can runes replace good fusion planning?

No. Runes amplify a spine—you still need creature parents and a scheduled hybrid.
